Welcome to Bhutan! Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. After lunch, explore the historic Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower now home to Bhutan’s National Museum, followed by Rinpung Dzong, an impressive fortress-monastery built in the 17th century. In the evening, enjoy free time to explore Paro town, browse local handicrafts, or relax at the hotel. Overnight at a comfortable hotel in Paro.
After breakfast, drive to Satsam Chorten and begin the scenic hike to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. The trail climbs through pine forest decorated with prayer flags and offers magnificent views of the monastery. After lunch, visit historic Kichu Lhakhang and, if time permits, stop at Drugyel Dzong before continuing toward Shana, the starting point of the Jomolhari trek. Arrive at camp and prepare for the trekking adventure ahead.
The trek begins from Shana and follows the Pa Chhu River through beautiful forested landscapes. The trail passes through pine, oak, rhododendron, and other Himalayan vegetation, with occasional farmhouses and traditional settlements along the way. Several ups and downs make this a rewarding but demanding first trekking day. The trail gradually enters a more remote mountain environment, and you may notice an old route leading north toward Tibet. Camp overnight at Thang Thangkha in a peaceful meadow.
Today the trail gradually leaves the dense forest as the landscape opens into a dramatic high-altitude valley. After passing a small army post, continue toward Tegethang, a winter settlement used by yak herders. The changing scenery provides an increasing sense of entering the high Himalayas, with impressive mountain views appearing ahead. After a steady climb, arrive at Jangothang, the famous Jomolhari Base Camp, surrounded by spectacular peaks and alpine scenery.
Spend a valuable acclimatization day at Jangothang while enjoying the magnificent mountain scenery surrounding the camp. Depending on your fitness and interests, choose from several optional hikes: a hike toward the Jomolhari Glacier, a shorter walk toward the Jichu Drake Glacier, or a challenging climb on the ridge between Jomolhari and Jichu Drake for exceptional panoramic views. This rest day helps your body adjust to the altitude before crossing the high passes ahead.
Today is one of the most spectacular and challenging days of the trek. The trail passes yak-herding camps and Tsho Phu Lake before climbing steadily toward Bonte La (4,900 m), the highest pass on the trek. From the pass, enjoy magnificent views of surrounding Himalayan peaks before beginning a steep descent toward Dhumzo. The remote Soi Yaktsa Valley features dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, deep side valleys, and snow-covered mountains. Keep an eye out for Himalayan blue sheep.
Leaving Dhumzo, the trail climbs through beautiful rhododendron, birch, and oak forests draped with moss. Higher up, the forest gives way to open meadows and impressive juniper trees before reaching a ridge overlooking the remote valley. After passing yak-herding camps, continue toward Tagalun La (4,550 m). The climb to the pass is steep but rewarding, with magnificent mountain views. Descend toward the pristine campsite of Thombu Shong, where takins may occasionally be spotted.
Begin the day with a short climb toward Thombu La (4,300 m), followed by a beautiful ridge walk offering views of surrounding Himalayan peaks and rhododendron-covered slopes. The trail then descends steeply toward the road end at Zankepang, marking the completion of the trek. Say farewell to your trekking crew and drive onward to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. After checking into your hotel, enjoy a relaxed evening exploring the city or resting after the trek.
After breakfast, explore the highlights of Thimphu, including the National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma Statue, Changangkha Lhakhang, Takin Preserve, and Sangaygang Viewpoint. Visit Tashichho Dzong, the impressive seat of Bhutan’s government and the central monastic body. Depending on time, experience Bhutanese culture at Simply Bhutan. Later, drive back to Paro, enjoying views of the countryside and a possible stop near Tamchog Lhakhang. Overnight in Paro.
After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your onward flight. Your Bhutan cultural and Jomolhari trekking adventure comes to an end with unforgettable memories of Himalayan landscapes, Buddhist heritage, remote mountain valleys, and the warm hospitality of Bhutan.
